Annual Investment Allowance Set To Increase

The Chancellor announced in the Summer Budget 2015 that the annual investment allowance (AIA) will be increased from £25,000 to £200,000 from January 2016 onwards.

Permanent increase to £200,000.

The AIA was introduced in April 2008 as a tax incentive for businesses to invest in new equipment, machinery etc. It allows businesses, regardless of size, to deduct the full cost of plant and machinery (excluding cars) from their profits in the year of purchase, rather than being spread over ten years or more. Currently, the AIA applies to expenditure up to an annual limit of £500,000 but this was due to reduce to just £25,000 from 1 January 2016. However, in his Summer Budget 2015, the Chancellor announced that the AIA would only be reduced to £200,000 from 1 January 2016 and would be maintained at that level on an ongoing basis. This will make life simpler, without the need to check whether the limits have been exceeded for accounting periods which straddle a change in the AIA limit.
