We all know about the government's policy on making company cars greener by offering lower tax charges to drivers of low CO2 emission vehicles. But there are also incentives for the businesses providing the cars. How can you make sure you don't miss out? Capital allowances
Normal rule. When your company buys a new car, it can't offset the full cost of it against its profits. Instead, it can only deduct a proportion of the cost each year until the full amount has been claimed. This is known as a capital allowance. For conventional cars, in the year of purchase the capital allowance is equal to either 18% or 8% depending on its CO2 emissions.
Energy efficient. If you buy a new car which has a CO2 emissions figure less than or equal to 110g/km then you can claim a 100% capital allowance. This means that the full purchase cost can be claimed as a deduction against the company profits in the year of purchase. This relief is due to be withdrawn for all cars registered after March 31 2013 but replaced with a new 100% relief for cars with CO2 emissions of 95g/km or less.
Qualifying cars. When the 100% was introduced in April 2002, there were very few cars that qualified. Unless you were happy driving around in, say, a Smart car, you were unlikely to take advantage of this relief. However, there are now over 600 cars in this category.
Tip. Check with the dealer or find out the emissions figure yourself by visiting http://www. vcacarfueldata.org.uk/ search/vedSearch.asp.
Example. Your company buys you a £21,000 Audi A3 TDI Sport to use as, say, your second car. The standard offset against the company's profits in the year of purchase should be £3,780, a reduction in the tax bill of £756 (assuming a 20% Corporation Tax (CT) rate). However, the car has emissions of 109g/km so the entire £21,000 can be set against the company profits, reducing the company tax bill by £4,200 (£21,000 at a 20% CT rate)!
